In an earlier post “It’s a beautiful sight” I mentioned the names of our three committee member who have been managing our Beautification project for the last 2 1/2 years. It has become clear that those kudos were not without merit based on the notification we recently received from the Keep Michigan Beautiful, Inc. Board of directors.
About three weeks ago a Judge for this contest was passing through our township took note of the beautiful flower beds lining the I75 \ M54 interchange (Exit 131) and upon returning to their office immediately sent our Township Supervisor a request to submit an application for the Keep Michigan Beautiful Contest. CLIO AREA COMMUNITY
Five or six years ago the BDA began work on the Linden Road Park, clearing brush, cutting trees and completing a pedestrian bridge that would cross a small creek that runs under Linden road. Once constructed, the bridge connected the ever growing network of bike paths that previously ended at the creek. This project was put on hold for the next three years.
Pete Chargo, one of our board members, felt that the BDA needed to revisit the park as a summer project. He wanted to create a nature trail with a handicap accessible picnic area which would also include benches.
Once he received the go ahead, over 30 dead trees were removed opening an area where wood chips rather than asphalt would be placed creating an earth friendly nature trail. Pedestrian traffic meanders through the low lying area near the creek where they can see fish and wildlife. Eventually, hikers will reach the west end of the park and climb a slope that will direct them back up to higher ground.
The nature trail will be completed by the end of summer 2012 with the picnic and seating area to be finished next spring. We anticipate that next year travelers and residents will have a full summer to enjoy the natural beauty located here in Vienna Township.
